Internet Advertising Market Shares

Internet Advertising is a huge industry that has revenues in the hundreds of billions, however, like many other industries, only a few companies control a large majority of the market share.  Below is a graphic that illustrates that companies with significant shares of the Online Advertising Market:

It should be no surprise to anyone that Google controls a significant share of the market.  Moving forward, one would expect and increase in percentages of social networks shares, and for Google to maintain their supremacy in the Industry.

  1. A lot of European and Asian countries specifically are starting to grow their online social media. Are there any companies out their that are threatening to overtake any of the main companies that are listed here?

  2. I am curious to see the actual recorded results of the impact of advertising on the internet. As for myself, I am very quick to close the screen when an ad is displayed, totally ignoring the message. The same goes for banner ads which, in my case, go completely ignored. If there are many others like myself out there, advertising on these sites would seem to be a waste.

  3. Internet advertisement will be an industry that continues to grow exponentially as more users begin to use the Internet. Mobile platforms are increasing usage among Americans and that is an issue for firms such as Facebook that primarily make their revenues of advertisements. One of the reasons for Facebook’s IPO failure was the increased usage of Facebook over their mobile applications. They are running into difficulties advertising effectively over the mobile applications. Once they figure out an effective method of doing so, I would expect to see the market shares shifting, resulting in larger portions going to social media outlets.

  4. Internet advertising is a developing industries now that people really more in internet than ever, and people are going to really more in the future. Internet advertising is going to grow much more in the next few years. I think google is always going to take the lead simply because it has the biggest data that comes from google.com that you can search whatever you want or are interested in, and also gmail, which they scan your emails for specific words to see in what are you receiving in your mail. For me internet advertising is going to continue growing and it is going to get more agressive.

  5. I have noticed that Facebook has increased thier online advertising trememdously over the past three to four years. Just recently, facebook has began to use advertisements in the news feed section of facebook. I have scrolled down on my facebook page, and have even seen multiple advertisements during the process. More and more companies are trying to reach consumers directly, and by going to facebook, business are starting to see the benefits. Marketers believe if you post advertisements on facebook, and people make good comments about your product, and even like the add, then this will help spread word of the mouth influence on your product.

  6. The chart really puts things in perspective. I was aware that Google controls a significant part of the online advertising market, but I did not realize it's almost 45%. Wow, that's a lot. I mean, I guess it is totally conceivable. Pretty much everyone uses Google for one thing or another making the site an enormous pool of potential customers. Also looking at the chart, I was surprised to see how low Facebook's percent is. I expected it to be higher. Advertising is the company's main source of revenue and they have vast population of users.

  7. My professor informed our class about the current market control as far as search engines go. Google controls about 88% with it's closest competitor being Bing with only 6%. So it doesn't suprise me that Google would have such a hold on online advertising. It will take time probably past our lifetime for someone to take Google's place but it will happen just ask Yahoo.

  8. Just as you said I am not surprised by the percentage of Market share that Google currently holds. I am however surprised at how small of the market share that Facebook holds. It goes to show that although the social media site of Facebook is very prominent in the United States, doesn't mean the same globally. I am however interested in learning about more of who the "other" portion of the market share is since they currently hold 39% of the market.
